굿 (Gūt) is a Korean ritual performed by shamans acting as a mediator between the present and past, communicating with ancestors and descendants. The shamans interact with the deceased through different phases: Summoning their spirits, listening and praying to them, and celebrating life with the living in attendance. Each phase involves a variety of songs, dances, ensemble playing using traditional instruments, and other performing arts practices.
CAMP collaborated with four Korean composers—Youshin Gim, Soobin Lee, Seokmin Mun, and Sangbin Rhie—to reimagine the ritual, contemplating the meaning of life and death. The commissioned works were composed for saxophone, percussion, piano, and voice, and were premiered online in January 2022.
In addition to the original GŪT project, the PROJECT GŪT in-person concert will present works by three winners of the CAMPGround22 commissioning competition: Dorothy Hindman, Robert, McClure, and Jõao Pedro Oliveira. Also to be performed are solo piano works by Emily Koh and Tyler Kline. Including three world premieres, all works are commissioned by CAMP performing artists Jamie Jordan (soprano), Zach Hale (percussion), Kevin von Kampen (percussion), Eunmi Ko (piano and recorder-keyboard), Robert McCormick (percussion), and Katherine Weintraub (saxophone).
This program showcases the distinctive musical languages of nine contemporary composers and top-notch performances by the CAMP ensemble.
